Oak Lodge, June 23

” I was reassured the moment I contacted Oak Lodge to arrange to visit and speak to the staff team and visit my YP that he was in a supportive environment. Professional, kind and knowledgeable all members of the team I spoke to knew my YP, from the way they spoke about him, I could tell they care about him, are invested in him and are extremely proud of him. During initial discussions about my YP the deputy and manager advocated for him well, and really drilled down into what they felt were in his best interests and what he needs. My YP has some complex trauma for such a young child, the team understand him and what he needs now and in the future.

Having never visited a children’s home for a child so young, I wondered what the home environment would feel like for such young children. It was a pleasure to visit my YP at Oak Lodge, an unassuming (not obviously a children’s home) home environment from the outside, this home is well placed with a lovely little park across the street. The home internally, was like a family home, well decorated with photos and personal items, light and airy, it is well presented, and I thought from a young child’s viewpoint this is an environment that young children need.

The staff in the home were kind, and considerate of all the children. The staff and children were enjoying having fun, playing army, and practicing their scary faces, which was a pleasure to see, the children really enjoyed this.

Again, the staff team are skilled and professional, I observed their skills when my YP suddenly became dysregulated, they managed to assist and support him well, the staff member who was not on shift but came to the home too, took the time to soothe the young person when he was extremely upset. This is care at its finest, the little children who live here, have such a wonderful, experienced team. The children themselves are happy and have wonderful relationships with the team, they respond well to the routine and boundaries in the home and are supported in every way, physically, emotionally, psychologically, and socially.

I would like to add that the team work extremely hard, and they care about the small things for children, as much as the big things. I know that my YP is receiving the best care, and this will go some way to navigating the experiences he has had before Oak Lodge”.

“As my YP’s  IRO I have always been pleased with the care and support she receives from the staff within Halliwell.  She is settled and have brilliant relationships with all involved and it feels like a big family.  I like the homely feeling and the set-up of the home which I believe helps my YP feel very much at home”.

Communication

Staff at Halliwell are always responsive to emails, video calls and open to me and my YP’s completing visits.  Whenever I have sent emails and requested information it is responded to within 24 hours.

Staff also support my YP to communicate with professionals, peers and others in the community.

Outcomes for children

Since living at Halliwell my YP has made great progress.  She has been processing lots of events that have happened to her whilst settling into the home.  She has been supported to attend regular CAMHS appointments and have her medication reviews and adapted when needed.  My YP has commenced attending extra curriculum activities: Dance and Brownies.  This has allowed her to make connections with peers and build her self-esteem with my YP taking part in her first dance show!

Every LAC review / progress meeting we have it is clear there is a focus on achieve our best hope for my YP to transition to a foster placement and the tasks to be completed for this to happen.

Supporting contact

Although my YP does not have any face to face contact with anyone currently Halliwell have been supportive in ensuring YP has indirect telephone / video calls, letters, cards and gifts.  They have also offered to complete any direct contact if / when this is agreed for my YP.
